Member Area or Membership Platform?
"Framer membership" covers two very different needs, and picking the wrong tool for yours is the most common mistake.
You need a member area
A known audience gets access to exclusive pages: a community resource hub, course content, a paid newsletter archive. Members log in and read. PageLock covers this with locked pages and per-member credentials, no external platform, and your content never ships to the browser before login.
You need a membership business
Strangers sign themselves up, pay recurring subscriptions, upgrade tiers, reset their own passwords. That is platform territory: Memberstack or Outseta plus Stripe. More power, more cost, more moving parts. See PageLock vs Memberstack and PageLock vs Outseta for an honest split.
The middle path: a simple paywall
Many creators sell access with the checkout they already have (Stripe payment links, Gumroad, Lemon Squeezy) and deliver PageLock credentials on the thank-you page. You get paid gated content in Framer without subscription infrastructure, and can graduate to a platform later if self-serve signup starts to matter.
Why not Framer's built-in password?
It gates the whole site with one shared password, so your public pages go dark and every member shares one secret you can never rotate per person. Fine for a private staging site, wrong for a member area. More in the password protection guide.
Structuring Gated Content in Framer
A member area is usually more than one page. Two patterns cover almost every site.
A locked hub page
One protected page acts as the members-only homepage and links out to everything else. Simplest to run: one lock, one credential set, and the hub is the only entrance members need to remember.
Locked CMS collections
Store lessons, issues, or resources as Framer CMS items and lock the collection pages. New content published to the collection is gated automatically, which is what makes course sites and newsletter archives manageable at scale.
Launch Checklist
Start on your staging domain, where PageLock is free, and build the full flow before charging anyone: lock the hub page, add one test member credential, publish, and confirm in a private window that the published page contains only the login form. If your members-only content shows up in View Source, something is wrong; with a server-side gate it will not be there.
Decide how access is sold before launch day. The simplest working pattern is a Stripe payment link or Gumroad checkout whose confirmation page or receipt email tells the buyer how to get their credential. Manual onboarding is fine at the start: it is a few minutes per member, and you learn who your members are.
Moving to the custom production domain requires a paid PageLock plan; check the live pricing page for plans and the user limits that matter to you. From there, growth is operational: add members as they join, revoke them when they leave, and keep publishing content into the locked pages or CMS collections, which inherit protection automatically.
Common Questions
Is this a full Framer membership platform?
No, and that is the point. PageLock gives you gated content in Framer: locked pages, per-member credentials, and a branded login. It does not do self-serve signup, subscription billing, or member profiles. If you need those, a platform like Memberstack fits; see PageLock vs Memberstack.
How do members pay for access?
Sell access through the checkout you already use, such as Stripe payment links, Gumroad, or Lemon Squeezy, and send credentials after purchase. PageLock handles the gate; your checkout handles the money.
Can I gate Framer CMS content?
Yes. PageLock supports Framer CMS locking, so dynamic collection pages like course lessons or article archives can sit behind the login, not just static pages.
How many members can I add?
You can add multiple users per lock and revoke any of them individually. For current plan specifics and limits, check the live pricing page.
